Carnaxide is the third-oldest parish in the country. It was mentioned in official documentation for the first time in the 14th century but its origins date back to the 13th century. Nowadays it belongs to the União de Freguesias de Carnaxide e Queijas in the county of Oeiras.
The old centre of Carnaxide, on the side of a hill with the same name, once had a magnificent view over Linda-a-Pastora and Jamor.

In the 18th century, after the 1755 earthquake, King José ordered some improvements in Carnaxide, namely the construction of an aqueduct and a fountain in the town centre. Over the century there was also a significant growth in the resident population and an increase in farming.
Large farmhouses were built at the end of the 19th century and some recreational farms still exist today.

Carnaxide was once one of the favourite locations for Lisbon’s wealthy families to relocate to. Especially during the holiday season, the capital’s wealthy families would spread out among Carnaxide’s various famous houses, some of which still exist today.
King Pedro V and the royal family, the poet Almeida Garrett, Tomás Ribeiro, Camilo Castelo Branco, among others, spent time here.

The area has several gardens, particularly the Jardim Fernando Pessoa, services, restaurants, shops, the Ruy de Carvalho Auditorium, the parish hall, the Carnaxide Municipal Library, a day care centre and the parish church.
